ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the association between serum nitric oxide (NO) and hypertension among women in Suzhou. Methods Blood pressure, height, weight and waist circumference (WC) were measured and factors including smoking, alcohol intake, family history of hypertension were investigated and blood glucose, blood lipid, serum NO were tested among 1453 women aged ≥30 years who lived in Jinchang district of Suzhou. Association between serum NO and hypertension was analyzed by univariate and multivariate methods. Results The mean levels of serum NO in hypertensive and normotensive persons were 28.17 (17.42-45.30)μmol/L and 27.56(17.19-44.42) μ mol/L, respectively, with no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05).Results from multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that low serum NO was not associated with hypertension, after adjustment for confounders (OR=0.979, 95% CI: 0.747-1.283).The mean levels of systolic blood pressure / diastolic blood pressure were 130.1/83.3,128.5/82.7,129.8/83.2 and 129.1/83.3 mm Hg for whose serum NO level were in the first, second, third and fourth quartile, respectively. The risk of hypertension did not change along with the elevated serum NO levels.Compared to the first quartile of serum NO, the risks of hypertension in the second, third and fourth quartile did not change after adjustment for confounders and OR were 0.988 (0.709-1.377), 1.001(0.720-1.390) and 1.077 (0.774-1.499), respectively. Conclusion The serum NO level was not associated with hypertension in women in Suzhou.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo observe the alterations of saliva nitrate and nitrite level in patients with oral candidiasis.

METHODSParotid saliva and whole saliva were collected from 33 patients and 34 healthy volunteers. Concentrations of nitrate and nitrite in saliva were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Follow-up observation was performed on 10 patients after treatment. The data were statistically analyzed with independent-samples t test or paired-samples t test at alpha = 0.05.

RESULTSThere was significant increase of the concentrations and secretion rate of parotid saliva nitrate in patient group as compared with controls: (49.70 +/- 0.50) vs (21.51 +/- 0.60) mg/L (t = 2.692, P = 0.009) and (27.71 +/- 0.50) vs (12.55 +/- 0.60) microg/min (t = 2.554, P = 0.013), respectively. Significantly increased concentrations and secretion rate of nitrate and nitrite [nitrate: (6.46 +/- 0.94) vs (1.11 +/- 0.70) mg/L (t = 3.792, P = 0.000); nitrite: (8.48 +/- 0.58) vs (3.39 +/- 0.53) mg/L (t = 2.888, P = 0.005); nitrate secretion rate: (10.57 +/- 0.91) vs (2.10 +/- 0.74) microg/min (t = 3.464, P= 0.001); nitrite secretion rate: (13.91 +/- 0.55) vs (6.42 +/- 0.58) microg/min (t = 2.397, P = 0.020)] were revealed in whole saliva of patients group. Significantly decreased nitrate and nitrite levels were also observed in patients after treatment, especially the changes of parotid saliva nitrate secretion rate [(37.50 +/- 0.50) vs (14.34 +/- 0.64) microg/min (t = 3.142, P = 0.012)], whole saliva nitrate [(14.29 +/- 1.01) vs (2.59 +/- 1.03) mg/L (t = 3.475, P = 0.007)] and whole saliva nitrate secretion rate [(25.97 +/- 0.93) vs (4.12 +/- 1.00) microg/min (t = 3.922, P = 0.003)].

CONCLUSIONThe present study revealed the significant increase of salivary nitrate and nitrite level in patients with oral candidiasis is considered to be associated with the host defense reaction.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo understand the projects completion and research progresses in pediatrics which were funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and evaluate the accomplishment objectively and justly.

METHODSThe completion status of projects in pediatrics funded by department of clinical medicine II from 2002 to 2006 was analysed retrospectively, and important research achievement and outstanding development in some projects were reported.

RESULTSDuring the period between 2002 and 2006, 420 articles were published, and the average was 8.1 papers per project, which included 56 papers that were published in journals indexed by SCI (the average was 1.1 papers per project). The completion of general project was better than that of "the Young Researchers Fund" and small grant project. Ten post-doctors, 102 doctors and 109 masters were trained. Two projects were awarded with the first grade prize and another 2 with the second grade prize at the provincial and ministerial level, 4 items applied for patent and 1 was granted. These completed projects, which were mainly related to 7 of 12 subspecialties in the field of pediatrics, such as the respiratory disease, nephrology, neurology, cardiology, endocrinology, hematology, neonatology, are the major portion of the application projects and subsidized projects funded by NSFC, and achieved great research progresses.

CONCLUSIONDuring the period between 2002 and 2006, the 52 completed projects in pediatrics showed difference in the distribution and quality of accomplishment among subspecialties and among types of supported projects; there are some gaps between pediatrics and some other clinical basic subspecialties II, this situation released the research status and problems in development of pediatrics in China. The general projects completion was good, and many projects obtained research achievements, which reflect the leading function of NSFC in pediatric research.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinicopathological features of oral pemphigus vegetans.

METHODSSeven cases of pemphigus vegetans involving oral mucosa were included in this study. The paraffin sections were analyzed by routine light microscope.

RESULTSThere were 5 females and 2 males in this group, with an average age of 52.7 years. The course of diseases was from 3 months to 10 years. Oral manifestations included verrucous or papilliform hyperplasia of oral mucosa, with extensive edema and exudation. Similar skin lesions were found in 5 patients. Under the microscope, pemphigus vegetans showed epithelial thickening with prolonged rete pegs, intraepithelial clefts in suprabasal cells. Eosinophilic microabscesses was often seen within the epithelium. Other microscopic changes were intraepithelial edema and eosinophils infiltration, chronic inflammatory cells infiltration in the lamina propria.

CONCLUSIONThe microscopic features pemphigus vegetans described in this study are of valuable for pathological diagnosis of oral pemphigus vegetans.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo analyze the clinical and pathological features of 40 patients with secondary syphilis.

METHODSA total of 40 cases of secondary syphilis confirmed by serology were collected during 1994-2004 and were first diagnosed on presentation with oral lesions.

RESULTSThe white patch in oral mucosa was found in 32 cases with painless or slight pain in most cases. The most common site of the lesion was the tongue. The histological examination on eight cases was initially misdiagnosed as oral candidosis or lichen planus, but confirmed as syphilis after serology revealed nonspecific inflammation with intraepithelial microabscess and dense perivascular infiltration of lymphocytes and plasma cells in connective tissue. The symptoms showed dramatic improvement in 16 cases after benzathine penicillin treatment.

CONCLUSIONSThe oral manifestations of syphilis have specific clinical and pathological feature and attention should be paid to the suspicious oral lesions when patients are first presented in a dental office.
